Linux Operating Systems vs. Flavors (distributions)

Common Misconception

What is Linux? Linux is an open source operating system that is freely distributed. Compare to Windows operating systems ( XP Pro, Vista, Small Business Server, etc.), Linux is a better operating system in term of stillbility, security, scalable growth, and variety of included software. In term of easy of use, most new users might be intimidated by Linux simply because it's not Windows. However, there has been a major push in diferent flavors to make Linux more user-friendly.

Why are there so many different Linux operating systems? The fact is there is only one Linux operating system, and many different flavors or distribution. In the world of Linux most people confuse the operating system with its flavors (distributions). Linux is the operating systems, the master platform software that controls, communicates with, and allocates computer hardware resources to other software. Linux may vary in version meaning there may be newer versions. Despite the different versions, there is only one Linux operating system. On the other hand there are many flavors. A flavor or distribution of Linux is simply the Linux operating bundle up with serveral different vendor specific top level user software. In most cases it is the vendor specific user software bundle that makes the various flavors of Linux. Some of the different flavors of Linux includes:

  • Big Linux
  • CentOS
  • CensorNet
  • Fedora
  • Knoppix
  • Lindows
  • Smoothwall
  • SELinux
  • TurboLinux
  • Ubuntu
  • Xandros

My favorite distributions are Knoppix, Fedora and Ubuntu. Knoppix is an entire operating system that can run from a cd rom drive without having to install it on the computer hard drive.
